Product Overview

Together with the New Lakota Dictionary, this pedagogically oriented grammar textbook offers the most comprehensive documentation of the Lakota language to date, providing a self-study reference and practice guide for second language learners of Lakota, as well as a reference material for linguistic researchers, Lakota language teachers, and native speakers. Based on authentic narratives and dialogues recorded from hundreds of Lakota speakers, this book helps the learner gain a deeper understanding of how native speakers describe their worldview in terms of grammatical structures and cultural patterns.

The 2nd Edition contains substantial additions to the appendix and three new units covering simultaneous verb constructions.

I don't think I've ever read a better grammar of any North American language (the languages I care about). This is certainly an extraordinary document that should serve as a model for all others aiming to do the same kind of thing: documenting a language in its full richness and detail, but making it all accessible to motivated and sophisticated readers (not necessarily linguists) as well as linguists.

Marianne Mithun (University of California, Santa Barbara)

This is the most detailed and accurate grammar of Lakota ever, and will serve as a reference grammar and as a pedagogical grammar for a long time to come.
-
Willem de Reuse (University of Northern Texas)

This book is very helpful for us fluent speaking teachers. It gives detailed explanations and overviews of the sentence structures and conjugation patterns. It also reminds us of a lot of the traditional words that we used to hear from our grandparents when growing up. This brings back good memories and shows how rich our language is.

Challenging resource to study Lakota language

Posted by Maggie Ekstrom on Apr 1st 2017

I have only had my handbook for a short time. It is very well-organized and nicely illustrated. I have studied several other languages, but this one will be a real challenge.

    Fun and approachable

Posted by Teal on Mar 14th 2017

I got this grammar book out of interest for grammar in Native American languages. I wasn't really planning to learn it, but after seeing how accessible the explanations are, I might give it a try. If you're interested in linguistics of any variety or just want to learn the language, this is easily one of the best grammar books I've seen so far.

I leafed through the book and at first glance I could see it is well organized, with a colorful and pleasant look which will help learning Lakota be more fun. A perfect learning medium.

    More than Amazing!

Posted by Carmelo Marino on Jan 18th 2017

I expected for a good book, but it isn't. It's much much much much more than that. It's wonderful, complete, understandable, precise and definite. Rich of examples and variations for various situation formal or casual. Fundamental for all students and essential for those who want to learn Lakota seriously, even for me I know little english. And the price? Very little compared to the value of the book. Congratulations and thank you. Philámayayapi

it's not easy but it's fantastic

Posted by Christine Seaton on Dec 31st 2016

I have always struggled with grammar , even in English, so this book will be a tough one for me, but it's the best I have seen, not since doing an online course have I seen this in depth in grammar in Lakota, I wish there was more online courses that offered Lakota language teaching but not so expensive that we can't do it, This book is a great way to start,

This is an amazing tool for learning the Lakota language.

Posted by Ed James on Dec 31st 2016

The exercises in this book almost start immediately with ablaut. I think I feel more comfortable using ablaut now in a few exercises than I have in many years trying to understand it from many different books. I am very excited to continue with this well formatted and informative book. Thank you Jan Ullrich and Ben Black Bear, Jr. Thank you to all the elders, students, and many others who have helped to make this an answered prayer.

    Language book review

Posted by Eric on Dec 28th 2016

Hard for me to follow so far. I need more time. Maybe I need someone who knows the languages to learn from and practice with. If my health, which is not good, holds out I can travel to Standing Rock this summer to immerse myself. Great Power willing.

    Language Learning Excellence

Posted by Rosie on Dec 26th 2016

This publication is one of the better language grammar learning products. This book exceeds all expectations in language learning from the levels of intermediate to advanced. Accurate sentence syntax is important. With that said, I noted that the sentences leaned towards the English language and not exact language translation. As a linguistics tutor at a local college, it is imperative that students learn the exact language syntax. As I do not have the Lakota keyboard at this time, I will show you what I mean. For example: Hoksila kin thapa wan yuha. Literal Translation: Boy the a ball has. I have found that in many languages articles are not included and there are some words that have no literal translation. What I am saying is this, in order for a language to fully be learned and understood, literal translation is needed in order for the brain to understand the complexity of any language. Now to take the sting out of my comment. This book is wonderful in every way shape it was created. This book exceeds my hopes in learning the Lakota language. For years I have been trying to learn and now I have that chance. In the future, I would love to see a book with Lakota language grammar basics. Something with numbers, colors, animals, plants, fish names and simple sentence formulations. I cannot thank you enough for working so hard to publish this book and making it possible for everyone to purchase a copy. In my eyes it is worth every penny. Again thank you for a wonderful Lakota grammar book.
